About George...

The postcard I will like the best is one you pick without any hints from me ;-)

If you include your address, I'll be happy to send a card back to you.

My wife (Sharon) and I live in Cleveland, OH. I was born here; Sharon in New York City. I have lived in Cleveland my entire life, 28 years on the East side, and 42 on the West. I graduated from Cleveland Central Catholic HS in 1970, and from Cleveland State University (Bachelor of Chemical Engineering) in 1976.

Over the course of 45 years (including 6 years of college co-op) I had two major careers. 28 years with the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. where I worked my way up to Supervisor of their Chemical Engineering and Laboratory Unit. That job disappeared after a series of mergers, reorganizations, and "right-sizings." During a period of unemployment, I was able to do some travelling and learn some new skills. My second career (15.5 years) was with the Cleveland Department of Public Health / Division of Air Quality. This time I worked my way up to Commissioner of the Division of Air Quality. On December 9th, 2016, I retired, earlier than I had expected for a variety of reasons.

I enjoy photography, travel, archaeology, and many other things. I've been doing film photography with SLR cameras for over 50 years. Mostly now I use digital cameras. My travels have taken me to 25 countries in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Some of these trips were to participate on volunteer archaeology projects (Mexico, Belize, and Chile). The most recent trip my wife and I took was a Rhine River cruise from Basel to Amsterdam.

I have visited (in this order): Canada, Mexico, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Guatemala, Honduras, Spain, Portugal, Belize, Ecuador, Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany, Thailand, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Italy, the Vatican, Austria, Slovakia, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, and Costa Rica.

My main activity for exercise is hiking with the Cleveland Hiking Club (CHC). With 1,240 members and typically 400 hikes scheduled every month, I believe it is the largest and most active hiking club in the US. I have logged over 7,000 miles of hikes with CHC. Cross country skiing and mountain bike riding are two other things I do a little of.

Clevelanders are avid sports fans. Currently our baseball team (the Guardians), our football team (the Browns), and our basketball team (the Cavaliers) are not doing very well. Ice hockey, roller derby, and polo are some other sports that can be watched here.

Cleveland is on the US North Coast; on the shore of Lake Erie. Canada is on the other side of the lake. We get a lot of weather here. Our record low is -20 Fahrenheit and the high is something over 100F. I enjoy all the seasons, and the seasonal changes.

Thank you to anyone who sends me a postcard. I've enjoyed sending and receiving postcards for as long as I can remember (since long before there was email). So, I was thrilled to learn about Postcrossing
