Van Gogh, Vincent: The Starry Night, 1889. Vincent Van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th century art for its vivid colors and emotional impact. On 8 May 1889, he committed himself to the hospital at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole. During his stay, the clinic and its garden became the main subjects of his paintings. Some of the work from this time is characterized by swirls—including one of his best-known paintings The Starry Night. |
