From 1941 to 1943 Smolensk was occupied by Nazi troops. Most of the city was in ruins... In total, about 400 thousand civilians were killed in the Smolensk region.
In memory of those killed in the Smolensk land in The Great Patriotic War in the Park Radevska of Smolensk was erected The Mound of Immortality.
This is a high ten-meter hill, manually poured by the hands of the inhabitants of our city. At the top of the mound there is an elongated 11-meter high stele in the form of a detailed book, on the sides of which the years of the beginning and end of The Great Patriotic War are indicated.
On the North side of the mound there is a wall with a copper bas-relief, above it large inscribed words: "People! As long as the heart knock - remember the price of our happiness, - please remember!»
On the sides of the bas-relief there are triangular granite slabs, which symbolize two bowed flags. At the foot of the mound eternal fire burns.
