A notable exception is a photograph they took of a total stranger. One of the most arresting pictures in the Yerba Buena exhibition, "Le petit communiste" ("The Little Communist") shows a communist soldier with a tear rolling down his cheek.
The picture, originally intended for the cover of a Samizdat Yugoslavian magazine, has gathered cultural baggage over the years, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the death of communist dictatorships all over Europe. The subject was "not a model at all," Pierre said, with Gilles adding, "He was a real young communist -- he looked just right."
Is there a touch of nostalgia for communism in the picture? That possibility has been mentioned by critics. "Of course not," Gilles said. "Just look at the tears."
