Siege of Haarlem in 1572-1573, painted in 1854, collection Frans Halsmuseum. It depicts an episode in the so-called 80-Years-War in which the Dutch defend themselves against the Spanish oppressor and his Catholic doctrine. At the time the men (and legend has it, women too) fiercely defending themselves against the Spaniards, were defeated, but the Spanish army suffered greatly too. Later the city was captured back, this time for good.
