The Mesa Verde in Arizona. Those houses are built into a ledge on the rockface. Up to 1000 people at a time lived in some of these dwellings.

They (Anazasi) left this arrea around 1250 BC, and it is not all clear why. Presumebly because or drought. But there may be other causes too.
It is a wonderfull place to visit.
And Mesa Verde NP is in New Mexico (it is close (hmm) to Arizona)!
