The ornate lamp-posts encircled by a sinuous sea creature (opinions vary as to wether it's a sturgeon or a dolphin) were erected in the 1870s - the finishing touch to the model of Victorian engeneering and enterprise that is Albert Embankment. It was built by Sir Jospeh Bazalgette, who also masterminded the capital's much needed sewage system. |
