About Gary...

My name is Gary and I am a retired radiologist living with my husband in Rancho Mirage, California.

The desert of the Coachella Valley in Southern California is a beautiful mix of palm trees, cactus, succulents, and other desert plants. We love seeing the many roadrunners, hummingbirds, and finches that visit our back garden each day.

The nearby town of Palm Springs was once a resort destination for Hollywood actors and actresses.

Our winters are lovely, but our summer days are dreadfully hot--in 2021, we recorded a high of 127º F (53º C). Summer nights are cool and pleasant once the sun sets behind the mountains in the late afternoon.

Our valley is surrounded on all sides by beautiful mountains that provide a cool retreat during the hot summer months, and snowy weather for those who enjoy skiing and other winter sports. One can wear short sleeves and short trousers on the valley floor in January while simultaneously enjoying a view of snow-capped mountains just a few miles away.

I will love any postcard you send. I enjoy strange and bizarre cards. If you wish, send me your worst card. Feel free to send a card that you acquired in a moment of bad judgment, a card that is so hideous you wouldn't even send it to your worst enemy, or a card that would make your mother ashamed of you. You can send me a torn or damaged card. You can send me the dumb card that was hidden inside a multi-pack of nicer cards. Send me anything. (If you are new to Postcrossing and don't yet have any terrible postcards, or if you are just not the type of person to send awful postcards, you can send me beautiful, wonderful, strange, or amazing cards as well.)

Many people ask me how I know Cantonese, since I'm not Chinese. I lived in Hong Kong in the 1980's, and spoke Cantonese almost exclusively during that time. I don't read enough Chinese characters to communicate in written Chinese, but I can still speak well enough to frighten elderly Chinese women.
