About David...

Hello,

I live in Attalla, a small town in northeast Alabama about five miles (eight km.) west of Gadsden. More information about this area may be found below.

I teach English composition, rhetoric, Western humanities, and American literature at a community college in northeast Alabama, USA.

My hobbies are reading (literature, history, religion and philosophy, and psychology mostly), maps, chess, films, birdwatching, fishing, and amateur astronomy.

I like postcards (and stamps) showing:

-- Scenes from your country.
-- Scenes from your city.
-- Maps of your country.
-- Famous people from your country (especially writers, actors, scientists, royalty, and chess players).
-- Local tourist attractions (museums, buildings, monuments, etc.).
-- Local geological formations or geographical features (mountains, cliffs, rocks, rivers, etc.).
-- Local costumes, customs, etc.
-- Traditional arms and armor of your country.
-- Ships or boats, preferably ones famous in your country.
-- Trains, preferably ones famous in your country.
-- Aircraft, preferably ones famous in your country.
-- Spacecraft (real ones), preferably ones famous in your country.
-- Birds from your country.
-- Chess.

The best cards are ones with the name of your city or country on them. However, any kind of postcard is welcome.

Thanks,
Dave

ABOUT ATTALLA:

Attalla is in Etowah County, Alabama. The southern end of the Appalachian mountain chain is within sight of my house. Overall, the area is composed of ridges and valleys, with large forests of pine, oak, and other tree species.

The climate here is humid subtropical, with average temperatures of 18 degrees Celsius. The summers are hot and humid (with extended periods over 32 degrees Celsius), and the winters are fairly mild (average temperature: 0 degrees Celsius). We have lots of rain and thunderstorms (many with tornadoes), but it snows only occasionally (once or twice a year).

The Coosa River flows through Gadsden, and Little Wills Creek and Big Wills Creek -- named for father-and-son Cherokee chiefs -- flow through Attalla to the river. The most significant local tourist attraction is Noccalula Falls.

The land that is now Etowah County was split between the Cherokee Nation and the Muscogee Creek Nation before settlement by Europeans. This part of Alabama was settled extensively in the mid-19th century.

Common wildlife in the area include deer, rabbits, squirrels, opossums, raccoons, skunks, porcupines, feral hogs, chipmunks, and bobcats. Bird species are abundant, like crows, doves, quail, cardinals, blue jays, robins, sparrows, and wrens. Raptors include various types of eagles, hawks, and falcons. Snakes include venomous species like rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths. Coyotes and armadillos are now moving into this area in large numbers. There are occasional verified sightings of black bears and occasional unverified sightings of cougars.
