The postcard shows it is from China, because that is my current location - but at the time it was sent I was actually in Portugal :)

It's a known bug in Postcrossing, and Paulo is working to fix it.

Hi Ana, I was intrigued and puzzled by your response of about seven months ago, on this page, to a query by nulis. I have not seen nulis's query. However, upon looking at the details under the map for PT-1, I was struck that this postcard has travelled 7784 kilometres from Oliveira de Azemeis in Portugal to somewhere near Maia, also in Portugal, which is about thirteen times the north-south extent of the whole of Portugal . . . ! I am wondering whether, perhaps, you have actually wanted to say to nulis that the postcard is shown as having been sent from Portugal, but was actually sent from China, where you were resident when you have posted it(?), and that THIS is the bug in Postcrossing that is yet to be fixed. In any event, that is a bug which I have observed, and which seems to explain the odd data for the journey of PT-1. Ingo

i like lighthouse postcards and the first postcard ever sent is a lighthouse postcard. I guess lighthouses are popular.

The Lighthouse postcard is very nice and good I have seen a Lighthouse in real life.

A very special first postcard, but why did you choose this one? It is lovely, but is there any special reason? And when you sent it, did you ever imagine that the project would grow to this amount? We have just sent the three millionth postcard a while ago. I'd be interested to know what your expectations for the project are in the future.

It is strange to see how big postcrossers community now is.. I think the best ideas ever are so simple, like this one, but somebody has to start it and you guys from Portugal should be possitioned somewhere close to Columbus:)) It is hard to imagine there are send more postcards through this project than lives in my country! (3.35 mln in Lithuania).. Amazing. Thank you..

7.784 km - a long distance, isn't it?

@Venia: Postcrossing had a bug with distances when people changed countries. This postcard was almost hand-delivered :)

In the early days of Postcrossing we didn't track the original coordinates of origin/destination of a postcard, so when a person moved, the postcards "moved" with him/her.

We have fixed this a few years ago for new postcards, but for the older ones we don't have a way to know the original coordinates (if the person moved in the meantime).

...except, of course, if it's this one! I've manually updated it to reflect the original data. 1 km was more like it :).

Have always loved stories—both the ones other people tell and the ones I create in my head. Now I find myself wishing that I could listen to a recording of both Ana and Paulo recounting the tale of how Postcrossing got its start. Then I could contribute just a little bit in my own mind to the story of how the chance for so many connections first came into being—an origin myth of mythical proportions. Thank you for giving Postcrossing to all of us!

Today, my husband got three postcards from me. He gave them to me, without even looking (I am a postcrosser after all). And when I told him he accidentally gave me his mail as well, he was completely confused. He rarely ever gets a postcard. And never one that is just for him.... until today.
They came from Ghana, where I support a school in the making. They write and send postcards. You can pick a motive and tell them what to write. I chose three quotes from song lyrics meaningful to us.

So it was exactly the perfect moment to be shown the link to the first ever Postcrossing card from Paulo to Ana.
Mine travelled further than 1 km, even though I am never more than 12 m away from him. I will never forget his confused facial expression. 🤗 You're very welcome, darling!

Nice. I love lighthouses. I half expected to see tiles or cod on the postcard. I wish there was a forum post with the first postcard from all countries (with a photo) for example GR-1 FI-1 . So maybe it wouldn't be number one but one of the first numbers with photo. It would be fun to see what cards were available then and what cards are available now. Thanks for sharing this.
